Abstract:
These data were removed from the State Library web site in June 2016 because a revised version without data that were outside of the project scope became available. See the State Library's Yellowstone Clearinghouse for the more recent data.

The archive includes two inventories. One is for the Yellowstone River in Park County that reflects conditions of 1999 and the other is for the river downstream from Park County that reflects conditions of 2001.

The 1999 Park County Historic Channel Modification inventory was prepared along with inventories for the years 1954 and 1973 for the upper Yellowstone River from Gardiner, Montana to Springdale, Montana in 2001 and 2002 to support the cumulative effects investigation sponsored by the Governor's Upper Yellowstone River Task Force. The 1954 and 1973 inventories are available from the Montana State Library Yellowstone Clearinghouse.

Starting with a physical features inventory conducted in April, 1998 by the USDA NRCS and Montana DEQ, 1999 aerial photos of the channel in Park County were viewed in stereo and a variety of adjustments were made to features identifiable as barbs or jetties, riprap, and dikes: some features were reclassified; spatial extent of features were reduced or extended as appropriate, and new features were added. Other features identified in the original inventory (photo points, irrigation diversions, etc.) were deleted. Additional information used to supplement interpretation of the 1999 photos included field notes and mapping done in August and September 2000 and 2001, and topographic mapping done in support of the project.

The downstream 2001 inventory of structures and bank features of the Yellowstone River that may affect the flow or course of the river. The inventory was sponsored by the Yellowstone River Conservation Districts Council and partner agencies.

The inventory was conducted in October 2001 using a Rapid Aerial Assessment (RAA) technique. Features were mapped using a helicopter and crew equipped with GPS devices. Subsequent ground-truthing (via jet boat) was conducted for purposes of locating additional structures not visible from the air and structure condition assessment.

Features identified and mapped during the RAA include:
- Existing stream stabilization structures (riprap, jetties, dikes, flow deflectors, etc.)
- In-channel structures (irrigation diversions, head gates, pump sites)
- Stream crossings (bridges, power lines)
- Irrigation return flow points
- Accelerated bank erosion
- Significant natural sediment sources (valley wall sloughing)
- Municipal Structures (water intake structures, lagoon discharge points)
- Floodplain Features (dikes, elevated ditches, elevated roads) - limited mapping
Purpose:
The data provides a reconnaissance-level baseline dataset of physical features within the Yellowstone River corridor. The data were used to prioritize future Yellowstone River cumulative effects studies and identify resource improve projects within the corridor.

Process step:
Park County Inventory: Starting with a physical features inventory conducted in April, 1998 by the USDA NRCS and Montana DEQ, 1999 aerial photos of the channel from Gardiner to Springdale were viewed in stereo and a variety of adjustments were made to features identifiable as barbs or jetties, riprap, and dikes: some features were reclassified; spatial extent of features were reduced or extended as appropriate, and new features were added by MT DNRC. Other features identified in the original inventory (photo points, irrigation diversions, etc.) were deleted. Additional information used to supplement interpretation of the 1999 photos included field notes and mapping done in August and September 2000 and 2001, and topographic mapping done in support of the project.
Process date: 2002
Process step:
Park County Inventory: Continuing with the layers from the previous Process Description, some point features were moved to better match the photos available for the area. Some point features were changed to line features so that this data could be used with the rest of the Yellowstone River data. Note that a point Displaced Car Body is different than a line Car Body.
Process date: 05/2004
Process step:
Park County Inventory: Several line files were joined together along with some features that had been points and converted to lines. These features were riprap (now Rock RipRap), dikes (now Floodplain Dike/Levee), barb (converted from points to lines and now Flow Deflectors), failed bank riprap (converted from points to lines and now Rock RipRap), and bedrock sill (converted from points to lines and now Bedrock Outcrop). These changes were made so that this data could be used with the rest of the Yellowstone River data.
Process date: 2005
Process step:
Lower River Inventory: Correct GPS coordinates to correspond with features visible on color infrared aerial photography.
